Enhanced Security of Supply in the Greater Basel Area: Primeo Energie Welcomes Swissgrid’s Grid Expansion Plan

Swissgrid, the Swiss transmission system operator, plans to build a new 220-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage power line between the substations in Froloo (Therwil, BL) and Flumenthal (SO). Primeo Energie welcomes this initiative, which will significantly improve the security of supply in the Greater Basel area.

Münchenstein, March 19, 2025 – The planned 220 kV line will replace the existing 145 kV line that currently connects the Froloo and Flumenthal substations. The existing line needs to be renewed due to aging infrastructure. As part of this project, the operating voltage of one of the two circuits will be increased to 220 kV.

Primeo Energie fully supports this measure. Cédric Christmann, CEO of Primeo Energie, states: “We have long advocated for increasing redundancy at the Froloo substation and connecting it to the transmission network from two sides. The planned construction of the new high-voltage line is therefore a crucial step that we strongly support.”

The new high-voltage line between Flumenthal and Froloo is part of Swissgrid’s Strategic Grid and ensures redundancy in electricity supply for the Greater Basel area. It also strengthens the long-term stability of the entire Swiss power grid. A working group appointed by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) has examined various options and recommended a planning corridor.

Before the public consultation phase, the SFOE and Swissgrid will hold public information events on March 31 in Therwil and April 3 in Flumenthal.
