Arlesheim: Temporary steam and smoke development due to boilers drying out

Münchenstein/Arlesheim, 11.12. 2024: In the new heating centre of the Birstal heating network, the first of two wood-fired boilers is currently being dried out with a fire. This may result in a temporary build-up of steam and smoke. This is normal and harmless.

The reason for this is the need to dry out the two wood-fired boilers. These are lined on the inside with fireclay brick, which is still damp. Green chips are burnt in the boilers for the five-day drying process. The first drying process began on Wednesday, 11 December 2024 and the second boiler will be dried in January. Even then, the high moisture content in the firebrick and the fuel may cause steam and smoke again. This is normal when commissioning a firing system of this size for the first time.

The heating centre forms the heart of the new Birstal heating network. It is located on the uptownBasel site in Arlesheim. By 2030, the network in the municipalities of Arlesheim Münchenstein and Reinach should be largely completed and heat production should reach 80,000 megawatt hours of renewable heat per year. This is enough for around 20,000 residential units.
